Evanston’s Environment Board was updated on the city’s multi-family waste services, as city staff begin looking at how to improve the services. 91²Ö¿â hauling is now split into three programs — residential waste hauling for properties with up to five units, a program for condominium buildings with six or more units and at least 75% occupancy, and a commercial franchise program for everything else.
Brian Zimmerman, the city’s solid waste coordinator, says the service for condos includes trash pickups twice weekly and recycling pickup once a week at a flat rate. Properties using the commercial franchise service choose their own waste pickup frequency at a variable rate.
Zimmerman noted some challenges with the current structure of the services. Its fragmented nature makes it unclear which service properties were eligible for; lack of standardization makes it unknown if commercial franchise properties are receiving enough service, and the difference in scale of buildings provides its own distinct challenges.
