Nearly a decade ago, Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity backed an effort to eliminate glass from Fairfax County’s single-stream recycling program. Herrity now thinks the time is right to reconsider the decision.

His change of heart came after a recent visit to 91ֿ Management’s materials recovery facility in Elkridge, Maryland. The supervisor toured the facility to get a closer look at the state of recycling in the D.C. region.

In a note to constituents, Herrity said it was remarkable “how much has changed” since the late 2010s, when county leaders eliminated glass from items that could be recycled curbside. That 2019 change was made for a number of reasons, including the propensity of glass to damage recycling equipment and the costs associated with recycling glass containers, which often are heavy.
