Part of Eagle County’s countywide climate action goals are plans to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill. The climate action plan aims to reach a 40% overall diversion rate, 80% organics diversion rate and 100% construction and demolition waste diversion rate by 2030.

Walking Mountains Science Center helps the county create an annual waste diversion report, documenting all the waste that enters and leaves the county. In 2024, Eagle County’s overall diversion rate, which includes construction and demolition diversion and diversion of hard to recycle materials, was 23%. The county’s recycling-specific rate was 31%.

The same year, Avon reached a 28% overall diversion rate while Vail hit a 28% overall diversion rate and 33% recycling rate. Eagle County’s rates are higher than the state average diversion rate (in 2024,15.7%). “But we could do better,” said Melissa Kirr, senior programs director of sustainability for Walking Mountains Science Center.
