Kent County residents recycled nearly 30,000 tons of materials in 2025, according to a new report from the Kent County Department of Public Works. That included more than 11,000 tons of mixed paper and more than 7,500 tons of cardboard. “At the DPW, we are proud to responsibly process recycling and municipal solid waste to work toward our goal of reducing landfill waste,” DPW Director Dar Baas said in a statement. “Our community supported this goal by recycling millions of pounds of materials and using resources provided by the DPW, like our Swap Shop, polystyrene densifier, SafeChem program and more.”

The county’s annual recycling & waste report gives an overview of all materials collected and recycled by the county. That includes materials dropped off at one of five of DPW’s SafeChem locations, where residents can bring hazardous household items for proper disposal like batteries and oil-based liquids.

Almost 400,000 items were dropped off at the county’s SafeChem sites last year. Materials recycled included 72,215 pounds of motor oil, 4,000 pounds of batteries, 71,621 pounds of oil-based paint and 23,814 pounds of fertilizer, the county said.
