Recycling in the Town of St. Paul may soon look very different, as the municipality prepares for changes tied to Alberta’s new province-wide recycling system. If the new system is implemented in town, residents would likely receive a wheeled recycling cart, similar to existing garbage carts used for municipal waste pickup.

The new carts would allow residents to place recyclables at the curb for pickup, said CAO Steven Jeffery. The proposed program would use single-stream recycling, meaning residents would not have to separate materials like plastics, paper and metals. “It all goes into this cart. The cart gets picked up by a truck, and the truck takes it to a facility that separates everything out,” he said. Although final details have not yet been confirmed, Jeffery said that current planning suggests a bi-weekly pickup.

Mayor Glenn Andersen acknowledged the shift could take some adjustment but said the new system would ultimately make recycling easier for residents. “The big word – change – it’s a tough one,” he said. “It’s just a different way of doing business. That’s it. And I think the majority of people will embrace it, actually. If you make their life easier, I think they’ll like it.”
