Beginning April 1, the Pitkin County Solid 91²Ö¿â Center will begin to accept used sharps for safe, compliant disposal, providing residents with a first-of-its-kind local alternative to placing needles in the trash. Eligible non-residential generators will also be able to utilize the new alternative.

Pitkin County is only the second county to implement this type of program in Western Colorado, after Mesa County, according to Cameron García, Pitkin County Solid 91²Ö¿â diversion analyst. “It’s a fantastic program,” García said. “We have heard from some of the community members that this disposal option would be nice to have. We’re excited about it.”

García confirmed that Pitkin County has not yet seen an accident occur but is being proactive about preventing it. “We want to make sure we take that risk and hazard away,” he said. “We never had a safety issue, but we know the potential is there.”
