The University of California (UC) announces a new systemwide agreement with Zabble, a leading provider of AI-powered zero waste technology solutions, that extends its Zabble Zero platform across all UC locations. The University of California has long been one of the nation’s most ambitious sustainability-focused university systems. Through this new agreement, UC Systemwide Procurement has made Zabble Zero available to all 10 UC campuses, six UC health centers and the UC Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, giving each location access to an end-to-end waste management and workflow automation platform designed to intelligently track waste service levels and contamination for measurable zero waste outcomes.

The systemwide expansion builds on results demonstrated at UC San Francisco (UCSF), where Zabble has been a trusted service provider since 2019. Spanning five campuses, UCSF deployed Zabble’s AI-powered Zabble Zero™ platform to streamline data collection and gain granular visibility into waste streams, contamination levels and disposal patterns.

The impact has been significant. Not only has UCSF seen a 100 percent return on its investment in the platform, but waste-contamination incidents have been reduced by 40 percent through daily waste audits and real-time stakeholder communications, and teams have saved over 90 percent in time due to automated analysis of hauling invoices and spreadsheets.

Daniel Chau, Assistant Director, Recycling & 91ֿ Reduction, UC San Francisco, commented: “At UCSF, we have nearly 100 different service accounts and managing the data and costs from it can be confusing. Zabble has helped streamline it and allows us to analyze trends much more quickly than before. The team also inputs findings from their waste audits and now we have a trackable database on issues that come up so we can educate the community on areas of improvement.”

Under the new agreement, all UC locations gain access to the full Zabble Zero platform, including Mobile Tagging™, Invoice Analytics™, Outreach Tracker™, Mailers, Truck Camera AI, and custom web dashboard and real-time notifications to campus stakeholders.

Early results from UC San Diego illustrate the platform’s potential for campuses just getting started. After a successful pilot, UC San Diego’s zero waste team has been using Zabble to quickly identify contamination hotspots and drive targeted outreach and education.

Elizabeth Lin, 91ֿ Management, Recycling & Sustainability Manager, UC San Diego, commented: “Once you get the hang of ‘zabbling,’ it’s very easy to tailor your efforts based on data—making the tool incredibly useful for understanding campus diversion trends and facilitating partnerships with a wide range of campus stakeholders.”

Zabble was awarded through the UC Small Business First Program based on its unique ability to combine computer vision-based image analysis and hauling data automation into a single platform, enabling campuses to make measurable progress toward zero waste goals.

Adrian Ferreira, Category Director, Facilities & Capital Programs, UC Systemwide Procurement, commented: “Zabble represents exactly the kind of innovative certified small business the University of California seeks to engage with. Their AI-powered platform offers advanced tools to help UC locations reach our zero waste and sustainability goals. By extending this technology systemwide, we are empowering campuses and health centers to strengthen UC’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship.”

Nik Balachandran, Founder and CEO of Zabble, commented: “This systemwide agreement with the University of California is a significant milestone for Zabble and for the future of sustainable campus operations. We’re proud to be the platform that helps UC with measurable, data-driven action towards zero waste.”
