Muskegon County officials are hoping to fill a gap in recycling by establishing a new, county-wide recycling center. The Muskegon County Commission approved a measure in January directing staff to apply for a Recycling Infrastructure Grant of up to $500,000 from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.

Funds are being sought to establish a centralized, county-wide recycling center at the landfill – Muskegon County Solid 91²Ö¿â at 9366 Apple Avenue in Ravenna. Currently, some municipalities around the county offer recycling services, while rural residents have a harder time getting access.

“One thing major we’re lacking is a drop-off site that people can drop things off at,” said Sara Cooper, sustainability and community relations coordinator for the county. If awarded, the county would purchase two compactors – one for plastic and one for cardboard – to be installed next to the landfill for all county residents to use.
