ÌýSimplified Environmental Solutions (SES) will host a free live webinar, “Zero 91²Ö¿â Webinar: Tackling Organic 91²Ö¿â & Recalled Foods,” on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at 2:00 PM CT. The session will be led by SES Chief Revenue Officer Jeff Hinds and is designed for food and beverage manufacturers, plant managers, and sustainability leaders.Ìý
Every year, over 60 million tons of food are wasted and landfilled in the US, according to the EPA. That waste creates methane emissions, leachate problems, odors, and contamination, and wastes valuable resources. But there is a better way. Mr. Hinds will discuss how food and beverage manufacturers can keep that waste out of landfills and put those resources back to productive use. He will also explain why a product recall, often treated as a disposal problem, is an opportunity to recover value and strengthen a company’s sustainability record.Ìý
Jeff Hinds commented, “I spent 30 years on the production side of the food industry, and I know how much good product and packaging ends up landfills simply because no one had a better plan. A recall event or an off-spec run doesn’t have to be a total loss. With the right process, everything in that waste stream can be recovered and reused, and I look forward to showing companies how to make that happen.”Ìý
Attendees will learn:Ìý
- What happens to food waste after it leaves a production facility, and how to control itÌý
- How food waste de-packaging and reclamation keep packaged product and organics out of the landfillÌý
- How to protect their brand and material resources during a recall eventÌý
- How to build and track a Zero 91²Ö¿â to Landfill program that advances sustainability goals and meets diversion mandatesÌý

The Food 91²Ö¿â ProblemÌý
Food recalls in the US hit a nine-year high in 2025, and 2026 is following the same trends, according to Sedgwick’s 2026 State of the Nation US Product Safety and Recall Index. Last year, the FDA recorded 517 food and beverage recalls, a 15.4% increase YoY, totaling 138.5 million packaged units. The USDA recalled 67.6 million pounds of food product over that same time, the highest in 13 years. And unfortunately, much of that product ends up in landfill rather than being recovered.Ìý
For food manufacturers, a recall event or off-spec run means pallets of product that can’t be sold, warehouses filling up, and pressure to move product fast. For many companies, the default answer is to send it to landfill. But landfilling recalled food is costly and wasteful, and for companies with waste reduction or sustainability commitments, every ton sent to landfill works against those goals.Ìý
