The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality recently awarded the Wilkes Solid 91²Ö¿â Department a $570,000 grant, announced County Manager John Yates during the April 7 meeting of the Wilkes County commissioners. Yates said the Helene Response Recovery grant requires no local match. The commissioners unanimously agreed to accept the funds, to be available July 1.
Wilkes Solid 91²Ö¿â Director Anderia Byrd said during the meeting that Adam Brizendine, the Wilkes Solid 91²Ö¿â Department’s new recycling coordinator, was very effective in seeking the grant. The funds will be available July 1.
Byrd said the grant will fund a new truck for transporting roll-off containers of trash from county convenience centers to the county landfill in Roaring River; three drive van trailers for transporting electronics and metal to be recycled; 21 dumpsters for recyclables; two one-ton trucks and a dump trailer.
