Leesburg, working with trash contractor Patriot Disposal, is preparing to conduct a tagging campaign to raise awareness of which materials are suitable for recycling. Town Sustainability Manager Deborah Moran briefed the Town Council on the program, a suggestion from the Environmental Advisory Committee.

Under the tagging program, town staff members and Patriot employees will inspect the contents of recycling bins before trash trucks arrive. Bins with hazardous waste, major contaminants, or excessive contamination—more than 20% of non-recyclable material—will not be collected. instead, they’ll get an “Oops” tag that explains what items can be recycled. Crews will return two days later to pick up the hopefully better-sorted bins.

Properly sorted bins will be adorned with a “Thank You” tag. Both tags will encourage residents to download the town’s RecycleCoach app, which provides guidance on what materials should be placed in the blue bins.
