The Syracuse Department of Public Works’ 91²Ö¿â & Recycling Revitalization Program initiative is being recognized by the American Public Works Association for it’s success in streamlining sanitation operations within the City.
Over the course of several years the City of Syracuse modernized its sanitation operations, starting with its conversion to a semi-automatic trash and recycling collection process that began in 2022, followed by the distribution of 96-gallon standardize recycling carts in 2023.
According City officials, sanitation workers for the Syracuse DPW accounted for 41% of all shoulder injuries within the City in 2022. In 2025 that figure was reduced to zero.
